So, I returned home not too long ago from Chavalah's appointment with the new Neurologist! I'M SO GRATEFUL for God's grace and never failing love! That's about all I have to say. Alright, alright, so most of you are probably wondering what became of her appointment!
Let me just say, that both Benjamin and I had a pretty good "heads up" that the news we received today was going to be "confirmed." So, it didn't really come as a complete shock to us, but nonetheless, a big chunk to chew and swallow! And a very "real" picture of the reality of taking care of "special needs" kids!
Bottom line: Chavalah was diagnosed with having had an in-utero (sp) stroke to the right side of her brain. Thus, causing significant paralysis (this is what they call it, not complete paralysis but significant) to the left side of her body!
What does this mean? Fortunately, we won't have to change anything that we are not already doing at this time! An injury to the brain is better within the first three years of someone's life than anything past that. BECAUSE, within the first three years of a child's life, the brain is producing massive amounts of new brain cells and replacing what's not so good. THERAPY is the best solution for Chavalah at this point, in the neurologists definition, "retraining of the brain" to help repair as much as they can. Doesn't mean we won't continue to see the same issues we are seeing right now further on down into her future past three years of age, but if any significant help can be had, it's better to be had RIGHT NOW!
We will be scheduled to have an MRI within the next few weeks, and meet back with our Neurologist mid-October to review the results. She wants to make sure that there also isn't anything externally that she's not seeing. She's already "prepared us" that the MRI might not actually show the damage from her stroke, but that clearly, her physical conditions have clearly "confirmed" her having had that stroke. She explained the brain is like an electrical wire. The actual "hot wire" of the electrical wire is the brain within the first year of a baby's life. It's mostly made of water and is "mush." Over the first three years of a child's life, it then develops the "plastic coating" over the brain with it's new brain cells, and if the stroke has happened within that first year, it's possible the damage actually done by the stroke won't show up as the "plastic" will have already covered over the actual damage. I hope I'm making sense!
THANK YOU AGAIN for your continued prayers! This is the short of the long!
Adoption Update: Our adoption worker will be stopping by this coming Friday to pick up the last of our medical documentation. At that point, she will be forwarding our "application" for approval which takes approximately TWO WEEKS, and once that approval has been granted, we are free to contact our attorney to start working with the courts on an adoption date! My guess is the soonest something would be on the calendar would be in about 6 weeks or so. So possibly October, more likely November! I'll keep you all posted as I know more!
